Nic Muscroft is spooky. He sees things that normal people like you and I don’t see. Not dead people, or UFOs, or hot chick teachers making out with each other in the staff room during lunch break, but other things. Spooky things. Things like the swirl patterns little white hairs make on the back of a pretty girl’s neck. Things like trippy shapes that form when rays of morning sunlight reflect through dew drops on the tip of a Panda’s Palm leaf. Things that have given him good reason to wax his board and paddle into the icy waters of the Tasman Sea every day since he first started surfing thirteen years ago. “It’s all about speed and light and the colors and the wind and the flow,” he says. “
As you can probably imagine, Nic isn’t your ordinary nineteen-year-old grom. He’s quiet. Eerily so—a product perhaps of an early childhood spent in the outskirts of the Australian wilderness. Until the age of five, Nic actually lived pretty happily in the bush, then one night his parents suddenly bundled up everything and shipped the whole family to the coast. Turns out, a close neighbor had opened a late-evening knock at the door only to receive a shotgun blast directly in the face. The crime was never solved, and Nic’s folks weren’t interested in hanging around while a killer was on the loose.
It turned out to be a good move, especially for Nic. The town they moved to was Geelong, a close neighbor of Torquay, Bells Beach, and Winki Pop. Sure enough, it wasn’t long before Nic was getting his first taste of the flow. He developed quickly. His style was low. Solid. Powerful. He avoided unnecessary wobbles and wiggles. Lines came to him, and he created his own. Deep. Definite. Mature. Soon sponnos started wanting this strange, freckled, rosy-cheeked kid on their team. Quikky nabbed him, and the push began. He did some junior comps in the years that followed, but his freesurfing simply blew minds.
Nowadays he lives in Jan Juc and spends most of his time surfing out Winki or traveling on promo trips. He may have a dig at the ‘QS, he may not. Either way, he’ll always be taking in the colors, watching every detail life throws his way, ripping like crazy, and spooking the hell out of everyone.—Adam Blakey
