Oxnard used to be a hush-hush land of perfect, a-frame beachbreaks, brawling locals, and tatted-up gangsters. Then came Tim Curran, and while you’re still going to cracks for dropping in on locals, the place has opened up a bit-just enough for the rest of the surfing world to witness some of it’s favorite sons rip up the wedging peaks of Silver Strand.
Meet Nick Rosza-the new guard of Oxnard surfing. Nick was born in “The Valley”, raised in Oregon, moved to Maui when he was five (where his dad, Jim, taught him to surf), and finally settled in Oxnard, where he learned from Tim Curran the subtleties of tube riding, airs, and power gouges.
Nick’s contest results are huge: 1st place in the 2004 I.S.A. American Surfing Championships at Huntington in the eighteen and under division, defeating Alex Gray, Dylan Graves, and Jeremy Johnston-all the while being two years under the age limit. Nick also won the N.S.S.A. Explorer Mens and Juniors in 2004, and the Explorer division for men in 2003.
After Nick receives his G.E.D. from his home school program, he plans on wrapping up his amateur career and hitting the W.Q.S. circuit hard. Don’t be surprised to see Nick Rosza hit the big time and follow another famous Oxnard resident to the big leagues-the kid has the skills to go big.-Justin Cotà‡
