The Gulf Coast of Florida isn’t known as a place for consistent, high-quality surf-in fact, it’s usually flat as a lake. This hasn’t stopped some Gulf Coasters from becoming the pride of the Sunshine State, however.
Enter Sterling Spencer.
Following in the footsteps of the Lopez brothers, the kid from Gulf Breeze is making his mark on the surfing world through his aerial prowess and solid competitive skills.
His last name doesn’t hurt, either. Call it the “Gulf Coast Pedigree,” but the name Spencer and surfing in the Gulf Coast have been synonymous with each other for decades. First it was his dad, Yancy IV (who first pushed Sterling into waves at the age of five), who ripped up the Gulf. Then along came Yancy III, Sterling’s older brother, who gave pride to the family name as well. Now it’s Sterling’s time to shred, and he hasn’t let anyone down, recently taking fifth in the …Lost Pro Junior in Huntington Beach, and before that, ripping his way to four consecutive East Coast NSSA titles.
As for the future? It’s all about the WQS: “I want to break into the top 200 so I can get into the six-star events where all the points are,” says Sterling. With sponsor support and a family backing like no other, look for Sterling’s name alongside some of the country’s best soon.-Justin Cote
