Hailing from the same waters as Shane Dorian and CJ Kanuha, Torrey Meister joins a long list of talented-yet underexposed-Big Island rippers. However, after some high-profile performances this summer in California, don’t expect the Banyans local to be under the radar for much longer. After making the finals of the Explorer Men’s division at the NSSA Nationals at Lower Trestles, Torrey backed that up with a second-place showing in the Lost Pro Junior, which is held in conjunction with the U.S. Open Of Surfing. With thousands of rabid fans watching the action, Torrey and eventual winner, Australian Ben Dunn, went at it blow for blow in a seesaw battle that saw the lead change several times before Dunn just barely walked away with the victory.
Look for Meister, joined by a talented group of young Big Islanders such as Casey Brown, Tonino Benson, and Levi Gonzales, to make a big impact in the next few years as the surfing world takes a well-deserved look at outer island talent.
