When you hear older people say, “Oh, to be fifteen again,” young Ventura upstart Chad Compton must be the image they envision. This fifteen year old’s surfing is on fire—he’s turningheads, surfing powerfully, and ripping his local Ventura spots with friends Adam Virs, Kai and Kellen Ellison, Sean Hayes, and Dane Reynolds. And for crying out loud, with a crew of mentors like that, there’s no doubt Chad will keep climbing the ladder toward a prospective professional career. Chad recently became the NSSA Gold Coast Champion for Explorer Boys in 2002, the NSSA Most Improved Surfer in 2001, and took a second-place finish at last year’s PSTA Junior’s division at San Clemente. Chad is also defying the laws of gravity whenever possible by scoring a solid first place at the O’Neill/Surfing Magazine Air Show at Salt Creek this year. Like any typical young surfer, Chad enjoys sleeping and eating Corales burritos. He also surfs every day, even in the worst conditions—riding his 5’8″ round-tail Merrick. Chad is one of those lucky young surfers who scores every good day up at his favorite spot, Rincon. It’s no mystery why some might dream of being fifteen-year-old Chad Compton—and it’s not just ’cause of the chicks!—Keppler
