Federico Pilurzu is like no one I’ve ever met. He was born on the island of Sardinia, Italy to an Italian father and a Belgian mother. At the perfect grommet age of eleven years old, his family relocated to the wave-abundant Central American country, Costa Rica. It was here he first grasped a surfboard and began to form his passion for the ocean.
Fast-forward a decade, and we have a blond-haired, trilingual, Belgian-Italian-Costa Rican professional surfer-quite possibly the world’s first. Speedy, powerful, and precise, Federico’s surfing possesses a clean-lined, buried-rail, highly polished technique complemented by aggressive lines and explosiveness.
Closing his second year of WQS competition (with only marginal results), “Fede” plans to move to California this December to train for the upcoming ‘QS season in hopes of qualifying for the next level. I have a lot of faith in Federico’s surfing ability and future successes. Once he spends some time in the competitive scene of California, finds more rhythm and confidence in heats, and gets a little more photo love, I think he’ll take off. I’m constantly impressed with his ability to surf faster and harder, each time better. He’s like no surfer I’ve ever met.-Brian Finch
