Talk about your unknown ripper. If there was a world tour for surfers not yet known by the media (NYKBM), KuiLee Murphy would be the world champ (especially if the tour was held at V-land). If you’ve ever surfed V-land, Kui was probably the best guy out-no matter who was surfing that day.
He lives at V-land and surfs there almost every day. Every once in great while, he’ll walk down the road and surf Pipeline. While there, he wins the “Who’s that?” award because he always manages to get at least one incredible left barrel-the people watching from the beach often say, “Who’s that? Derek Ho?”
KuiLee recently secured a fresh batch of sponsorships and might be ripping too hard for the media to ignore any longer. But until that happens, there’s something cool about a guy who’s unknown and can take down many of the surfers in the Top 44. One of my favorite things about Kui is he operates without a telephone. He’s a hard man to get a hold of if you need to ask him some questions. When I did bump in to him at Sunset and told him I wanted to ask him some questions for TransWorld SURF, he said, “Cool. Let’s hook up later.”
Afraid of how we’d actually arrange this meeting, I agreed and said, “Okay, but let me ask you just a few questions now just in case I can’t get a hold of you later.”Luckily I did, because I rarely surf V-land and haven’t seen the kid since.-Pete Johnson
Who do you look up to?
I definitely look up to Kelly Slater and Kalani Robb.
What do you do when there’s no surf on the North Shore?
I like to play golf at Turtle Bay.
What are your plans for the upcoming year?
Just to surf the Hawai’ian contests and do as much contests as I can in California. Hopefully, start the tour next year.
