First-place finish launches Fanning up the ‘CT ratings.
With his second WCT victory of the season, Mick Fanning, from Tweeds Head, Australia, moved up several spots in the ratings to the number-three spot, behind Kelly Slater (#1) and fellow Aussie Trent Munro (#2). The regular-foot, speed-based surfer, who’s more known for his freakish right-point surfing than left-hand reef pass attack, demolished a slightly watered-down field en route to his first-place finish in the Rip Curl Search WCT at Reunion Island.
The WCT Dream Tour?
Yep. Unfortunately for fans but fortunately for others, a record number of surfers did not compete in the Reunion event due to varying circumstances. Damien Hobgood, Dean Morrison, and Chris Ward were all injured; Sunny Garcia and Tim Curran were ill; and Shane Beschen and C.J. Hobgood stayed home with their expecting wives. In total, ten WCT surfers missed the event, opening doors for surfers like Morocco’s Abdel El Harim-no doubt the first Moroccan to surf in a WCT event.
No-shows aside, the action at St. Leu was intense. The wave itself is especially suited to high-performance backside surfing, unlike the last two stops at Teahupo’o and Tavarua, and the results showed it-only two out of the eight quarterfinalists were goofy-foots.
Fanning was on a roll from his first blistering warm-up surf, right up until the final, where he took care of Phil “Macca” MacDonald by a score of 17.10 to 5.30. Macca’s final point tally didn’t truly reflect how hard the regular-foot surfer from New South Wales, Australia was ripping throughout the entire event, taking out Joel Parkinson, Nathan Hedge, and Brazil’s Peterson Rosa before running out of steam in the final.
