Courtney Conlogue takes home her first National Title in the NSSA Open Women’s
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (June 30, 2008) – Over the weekend, Courtney Conlogue, the 15-year-old surf powerhouse out of Santa Ana, CA took home her first National Title with a win during the 2008 National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships presented by No Fear.
Conlogue triumphantly explained, “I’ve had my eye on winning Nationals all season long, I was training hard to prepare for the National Championship because I’ve waited five years to get it, so after working so hard, I’m pretty stoked.”
With $2,000, a National Title and a California Governor’s Cup up for grabs in the Open Women’s Final, Conlogue met perennial challenger Sage Erickson in the finals. In waist to chest high surf, Conlogue won with a picture perfect end to an epic contest. The deal was sealed as she paddled into one of the biggest lefts of the heat then stuck a seemingly impossible closeout re-entry that had the crowd at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, CA on their feet.
During the Governor’s Cup presentation on Sunday night, Professional Surfer Kalani Robb presented Conlogue with the “Kalani Robb Most Inspirational Performance” recognizing Courtney as the most inspirational surfer among men, women, girls and boys, throughout the whole event.
This weekend’s NSSA Nationals victory was foreshadowed by Conlogue’s record-breaking 4th win at the NSSA Open Women’s Southwest Conference along with a win at the NSSA West Coast Regionals earlier this season. Her serious training is apparent in the powerful, confident surfing that she has been consistently demonstrating worldwide this season.
At the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Seignosse, France in late May Conlogue took third place in the women’s under 18 division. Her season started with wins at the ASP WQS 2-Star Vans Pier Classic in Huntington Beach, CA, a second place finish at the Billabong Junior Pro in Sebastian Inlet, FL and third place at the ASP World Junior Championships in Sydney, Australia.
Following Nationals, Conlogue heads to her local break, the Huntington Beach Pier, to compete in the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing Events Presented by O’Neill, July 18 – 27. While at the Open, Conlogue will compete in the Pac Sun Battle of the Brands, the S3 Supergirl Junior Pro, and the WQS 6 star women’s surfing event.
Courtney Conlogue is supported by Billabong, Reef Footwear, Smith Eyewear, Toyota of Huntington Beach, Surfing America, Huntington Surf and Sport, Bushman Surfboards, Dakine, Nixon, Sex Wax and Go211.com
