Cool ContestsThe 2002 Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour Championships at 54th Street in Newport Beach.
For the second year in a row, springtime in Newps failed to provide quality surf for a quality contest-it did, however, get a visit from the Easter Bunny. This year’s Volcom Tour Championships were blessed with barely knee-high surf, but nobody really cared. Why? Because the final “Crusty” blow out of the season, held on March 30 and 31, is one of the most fun free-entry contests of the year with good food, video games, foosball, Shawn “Barney” Barron the announcer, and an Easter-egg hunt with the Easter Bunny. Oh yeah, and all finalists, even in the Grom division, got to split $10,036.73 in prize money. Winners included Nathaniel Curran in the Pro-Am (3,000 dollars), Dave Post in the Air Spectacular ($1,036.73), Jake Kirschenbaum in the Juniors’ (1,300 dollars), and Nick Rozsa in the Groms’ (1,000 dollars).
