Cormican Takes First At The Foster’s Outer Banks Pro

Kitty Hawk, NC–Aaron Cormican of New Smyrna Beach, Florida rises up through the ranks to take top honors and five of the forty-five thousand dollars up for grabs in the October 5th men’s finals of the Foster’s Outer Banks Pro presented by Wave Riding Vehicles in Kitty Hawk, NC. Cormican was the only surfer in the heavily stacked four-man final of this three-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event to rise up from Day One’s trials portion of the event after winning five out of six fiercely competitive preliminary heats. In epic and near perfect contest surf, compliments of Tropical Storm Kyle churning in nearby offshore waters, Cormican had his vision firmly set on being the first Foster’s Outer Banks Pro Champion as he went head to head with top seed Ben Bourgeois of Wrightsville Beach, NC, Kauai, Hawaii’s Jesse Merle-Jones, and Jody Davis of St. Augustine, Florida–finishing 2nd through 4th respectively.
Earlier in the week, the Women’s portion of the competition was held from start to finish on Day One, just prior to the start of the Men’s Trials, so these surfers could make another event that began a day later in California. Continuing her international winning streak, Karina Petroni from Jacksonville, Florida adeptly maneuvered her way to being crowned the First Annual Foster’s Outer Banks Pro Women’s Champion.
Addressing the crowd of spectators gathered under the summer-like sunny skies, Kitty Hawk’s Mayor Bill Harris said, “Our community of residents, businesses and visitors are excited to have this premier event here and look forward to having it return year after year.” Responding to Mayor Harris’ offer to host the event for future years, Event Coordinator Kathy Phillips replied, “Thanks to Foster’s long-term commitment to the sport of professional surfing, the outpouring of support from the local business community, the local & national media, the throngs of spectators who traveled here from New York to Florida and our sponsors, I believe we’ll be bringing this event back to Kitty Hawk for many years to come.”
After a celebratory Foster’s showering from his fellow competitors, Cormican immediately picked up his mobile phone in true millennium style and called his family. “Dad, I won!” hooted Cormican at the top of his lungs as the encircling crowd broke out in a burst of cheers. Next stop on the WQS is San Miguel Mexico’s Squalo Mexican Surf Fiesta.
