IRVINE, CA – (August 24, 2012) – California’s acclaimed counterculture surf event is headed back to Salt Creek as Billabong hosts the 13th Annual Cosmic Creek Surf Contest presented by Subaru, September 8th and 9th.
Far more than a mere surf competition, Cosmic Creek is a family-friendly beach happening built around a retro-style surf contest, all building up to a FREE Donavon Frankenreiter concert on the lawn at Salt Creek.
The Cosmic scene brings back the alternative and inventive vibe that went along with the surfboards and styles of the 1970’s & 80’s. It’s a two-day voyage back to an era where single-fins and twinnies ruled the world and inexplicably short surf trunks were the height of coastal cool.
To ensure authenticity, competitors are randomly assigned a different classic board they must ride in each heat. With everything from stingers to fishes to Pipeline pintails underfoot, what these throwback boards may lack in modern-day performance, they make up for in style and inspiration.
Categories in this year’s Cosmic Creek run the gamut from the “Cosmic Children” push-in division all the way up to the “Rolling Stones” for those 50 and older. At the top of the charts is the professional category which will offer a first prize of $1,000 and be hotly contested by some legends of the sport. The list of past winners making good on archaic equipment is not to be taken lightly, featuring such names as Rob Machado, Timmy Curran, Chris Ward, Dave Rastovich, Yadin Nichol, Tom Curren and Kelly Slater.
The contest is open to the public and runs 8AM-3PM Saturday, September 8th and 8AM-2PM Sunday, September 9th. To enter the event, download an entry form at www.Billabong.com/cosmiccreek, and turn in signed entry forms with payment to Hobie Dana Point or Killer Dana surf shops.
