15-year-old shines at home break handily winning third women’s WQS contest of the season
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (April 1, 2008) – Courtney Conlogue wins the Vans Pier Classic presented by Jack’s over the weekend in her backyard, Huntington Beach, CA. After a second place finish last year, she returned to the Huntington Beach Pier ready to climb to the top of the podium in the first North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) women’s event of the season. In contestable two-to-four foot surf, Conlogue’s powerful snaps and local knowledge propelled her to a strong finish following a week of competition.
“The waves weren’t huge, but they were clean enough and I know how to surf Huntington’s Pier under any kind of condition,” Conlogue said. “I had a great time today, I went out there wanting to win, and do my best to give everyone a show. All of the girls were surfing well, this is going to be an exciting contest season.”
The ASP WQS 2-Star Vans Pier Classic saw youngster Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA) surfing against Sage Erickson (Ojai, CA), Naje Mulamud (Hanalei, HI) and Lauren Sweeney (Carlsbad, CA) in the finals. Conlogue knows how to pick waves in Huntington Beach. Once on the wave Conlogue unleashed strong performances that put her comfortably on the top of the pack.
This weekend’s win is the third time that Conlogue has made the podium in 2008. The 15-year-old has been tearing up the juniors’ circuit with a second place finish at the Billabong Junior Pro in Sebastian Inlet, FL and third place at the ASP World Junior Championships in Sydney, Australia.
As a member of Team USA, Conlogue will head to France this May for the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. She is the Southwest Conference Women’s Leader in the NSSA for the fourth year straight. Conlogue will compete for the West Coast Championships, May 14th – 18th again at her home break, the Huntington Beach Pier.
