Damien Hobgood Hospitalized After Going Over The Falls At Teahupoo

Damo Update: After hearing from Billabong’s Robert “Bushy” Mitchell who is in Tahiti in preparing for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, Damien Hobgood will not be surfing in the contest as he has numerous injuries to deal with after his trip over the falls Monday. He has been released from the hospital in Papeete and is headed home to California tonight. We wish Damo the best of luck and a speedy recovery.

According to Transworld SURF‘s Senior Photographer, Tim Jones, Damien Hobgood got sucked backwards over the falls yesterday on an eight-footer at Teahupoo. Apparently someone had called him off the wave, so Damo pulled back, but still got slammed onto the reef. Though he is in stable condition, he did sustain a serious concussion, along with a chewed up shoulder and back, as well as a hole in the head. Initial guesses have him out of the water at least six-eight weeks. We’re glad he’s okay (more or less), and hopefully he’ll be getting back in the water soon. Stay tuned to Transworld SURF.com for any updates as they become available.
