The future met the present today at the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles in the form of Dane vs. Kelly.
Two Quiksilver guys; West coast vs. East coast; Grom vs. Champ, all the makings of an epic showdown were there–except the actual heat.
Blame it on Kelly.
Six-time World Champ Kelly Slater (friend of supermodels everywhere–he was chatting up Leo DiCaprio’s chick, Giselle, today) made the most anticipated heat of the day a sleeper as he waxed the last remaining trialist, Dane Reynolds, today in excellent six-to-eight foot surf today at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California.
Unfortunately for Dane, Slater started off the heat with a two air, multiple snap opener and never looked back after scoring above a nine. To me, it seemed like the heat was over after that wave as Reynolds was forced to play catch-up against the six-time world champ from the get go. While all signs are pointing toward an A.I. (who beat Guilherme Herdy to advance to round four) vs. Kelly showdown final, let’s not forget about the rest of the ‘CT…
Mick Fanning was looking good today. The “Fastest Surfer In The World has a style that translates perfectly into Lowers long, mushy rights. Fanning took down aerialist and fellow Aussie Kirk Flintoff with a toned down, yet effective approach to the long walls of Lowers.
South African Greg Emslie beat Damien Hobgood after pretending he was at J-Bay. Emslie was definitely a standout with his super long floaters and speed carves. Yeah Bru!!
Also faring well was Paulo Moura, who had one of the highest scoring waves of the day on his backhand. The large and vocal Brazilian contingent on the beach loved his act.
As Saturday is an off day, look to Sunday for some insane matchups, beginning with round four and wrapping up with the crowning of the 2005 Boost Mobile Pro Champion in the afternoon.
