Down days with Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning

With ASP world title contenders Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater hunkered down on the North Shore of Oahu as they wait for the predicted Pipe Masters swell to fill in, we decided to see what the two have been up to on the social media front. The photos the two have been posting are telling of their approach to winning—Kelly tries to psyche out his opponent by posting photos of previous Pipeline Masters trophies and GoCJ hashtags, while Mick keeps it loose and carefree.

Whatever happens, we know that the final day of the Pipeline Masters is shaping up to be a battle for the ages. The stakes involve a world title, and what the two surfers need to do to win it is simple: Mick makes the semifinals and he wins. Kelly wins the event (and Mick doesn't make it to the semifinals), and he wins. Up against CJ Hobgood (a close friend of Slater's and fellow Floridian), Mick has his work cut out for him. Meanwhile, Kelly's path to his 12th ASP world title will have to go through either Sebastian "Seabass" Zietz or Kai Otton. Both surfers are deadly at big Pipeline and will be gunning to take out Slater. Oh and did we mention all of this will be going down in what could be all-time Pipeline? Here's Slater's take on the upcoming swell via his Instagram account: "Saturday is lining up to be pretty crazy on the swell forecasts. 11’/15secs NW should be maxing #Pipeline. And with light ESE to variable winds it should be #Ridonkulous." Bring it on!

"PipeMasters Trophy, 2008 Model. Saturday is shaping up to be the day to hand this thing out and finish the @asp tour for the year. This is my favorite trophy. Each year it's an old #ClarkFoam blank, shaped by #GerryLopez, then painted by @philrobertsart using a photo taken by one of the legendary photogs like #JeffDivine or @brianbielmann. There's a lot of history in this prize and there is no event we surfers would rather win on tour (The Eddie might be the only more prized win). It's been years since we've had classic #Pipeline for the contest and since a goofy-footer has won it. @rob_machado was the last in classic 8-10' surf in 2000. Lets cross our fingers for waves like that. Tune in on Saturday to watch it live online. Thanks for all the support."—Kelly Slater via instagram

"Dear #NorthShoreDiary... Yesterday was a good day. Thank you. One if the best 5 point rides of my life on this wave. Too bad I wasn't on or behind the peak for takeoff but there were a few gems yesterday. And Saturday is lining up to be pretty crazy on the swell forecasts. 11'/15secs NW should be maxing #Pipeline. And with light ESE to variable winds it should be #Ridonkulous. I can't believe our luck for the final @asp event! So psyched. @toddglaser photo. #DodgingSecondReefers #HowBigsDaFreaks? #GoCJ"—Kelly Slater via his instagram account. Photo: Todd Glaser/Surfer magazine
