A quick chat with Kai Otton who will match up against ASP World Tour rookie (and current TransWorld SURF cover boy Nate Yeomans) when the Quik Pro ramps up again.
10am: Forgot to mention the shark sighting yesterday… Apparently Tanner Gudauskas was warming up for his heat at Froggies (the little cove next to Snapper Rocks) and spotted an eight foot shark of some sort (tiger or bull shark?) just outside of him. He got into the shallows and made his way over to Snapper sitting rioght next to Freddy P but neglecting to tell the Hawaiian about his little short staining incident. While we’re on the topic, the Fred vs. Tanner heat was the best of the day by far. The two powerful goofyfoots were going nuts, slamming the lip as only a backsider can. In the end, Freddy P won the heat with what I thought was the move of the event so far; a lightning quick backside carving 360 that was totally unexpected and unique.
7am: Still raining here on the Goldy… bogus! Had a few fun surfs yesterday and Snapper was sooo perfect last night before dark, yet the crowd was not even close to manageable so I shined it for a Duranbah session—which was just as crowded yet a bit more spread out. It’s tough to get good waves here… Looks like the comp is going to run as soon as the tide drops out a bit, and while it looks like shit right now, Snapper has a way of turning on really quick. Don’t tell anyone but we may hide out from the rain and watch it on the flat screen TV as it’s being played live on Fuel TV here. How cool would it be to see more surfing on TV in the states?
