False Start – One Wave: Kelly Slater
This twenty-shot sequence of Kelly Slater was captured at Bells Beach, Australia in April 2001. It’s all the same wave. We gave it four pages because Kelly continues to amaze us. At an age that many pros find themselves fading from the limelight, the now-retired six-time world champ is surfing stronger than ever.
Legendary shaper Al Merrick, who’s been an integral part of Kelly’s impact on surfing, may have summed it up best in the following excerpt from his Mow Foam, which appears on pages 72 and 76 of this magazine: “I don’t think people like Kelly come along very often. As far as his surfing goes, what he’s been able to accomplish, and where he’s taken surfing, he’s special. In my mind, he’s brought surfing to the level it’s at now.”
