San Diego, CA (December 20th, 2002)¿Reef’s Mick Fanning and Chelsea Georgeson have won both the men’s and women’s Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Rookie Of The Year awards, respectively.

World number 5 on the 2002 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), 21-year-old Mick Fanning from the Coolangatta, Queensland, Australia narrowly defeated REEF teammate, Kieren Perrow from New South Wales (who finished as world number 7) for the ASP Rookie of the Year Award. Fanning’s finals appearance at the X-Box Pipeline Master’s gave the Rookie sufficient points to overtake Perrow for the Award and edge out another REEF team mate, Windang’s Mick Lowe in 6th place.

Women’s world number 8, 19-year-old Chelsea Georgeson from Avalon, Sydney, Australia, clutched the women’s ASP Rookie Of The Year Award. Georgeson has yet to use her devastating backhand surfing to full effect on the WCT and she is certain to challenge for the World Title in the ensuing years. Georgeson had a scintillating 2002 campaign, which included winning the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games Women’s Championship.
