NSSA SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #10
PONTO, CARLSBAD
MAY 8-9, 2004
CONDITIONS: 2-4 and good on Saturday picking up to 4-6 and excellentPonto conditions on Sunday.

FAST FACTS: What a fine end to an amazing Explorer season. Withrecord-breaking participation in the 2003/04 Southwest Conferenceseason, the NSSA surfers were treated to excellent 4-6 foot waves andglassy summer-like conditions at Carlsbad’s Ponto Beach for the end ofthe season finale. The combo southwest ground swell and northwest windswell arrived right on target because a lot of conference titles were onthe line!
HERE’S THE WRAP UP – With Men’s leader Dane Gudauskas a no-show, thetitle was up for grabs between the top 6 guys. When #2 ranked ChrisDavis was ousted in the semis that opened up the door for AnthonyDuarte, Todd Hutton and Nico Becerra, who had to win the whole thing toclinch the crown. All three made the final with Duarte finishing aheadof Hutton and Becerra to nab his first ever NSSA title. BrandonGuilmette took his second consecutive victory in the Men’s final. Inthe Juniors division, Alex Gray had a substantial 1,300-point lead goinginto the event over #2 rated Ricky Whitlock so the title was his for thetaking. Both Alex and Ricky made the final but it was Dane Ward who puton what was probably his best ever contest performance. He absolutelyexploded on two lefts throwing huge turns on Ponto’s big left sections. His first wave score came in at 8.5 and his second scoring wave was abomb earning a near perfect 9.5 which posted a huge heat total score of18.0. Big Al took second along with his second consecutive Southwestconference title in the Juniors division and that’s impressive becauseit ain’t easy defending a title! 15-year-old Ryan Burch had a greatseason and deserved every bit of that Boy’s title he clinched. He alsoclaimed his fourth victory of the season taking a unanimous judgesdecision in the final. Dane “Air” Zaun is on an Explorer roll nailinghis fourth straight victory in the Menehuene final posting the onlyperfect 10 of the event. He also claimed the conference title with sixwins this season and never placing below 2nd in any final! In theWomen’s division, Alison Arvizu barely edged out Amy Chivers for theconference crown by 12 points. Amy won the final with Alison takingsecond. Defending National and Southwest Conference Seniors ChampionRusty Phillipy successfully reclaimed his conference crown and for goodmeasure took the Masters title when leader Parker McNaughton was upsetin the semis. That opened the door for Rusty who edged Parker by 90points with a fourth place finish in the final. Rusty may have won thetitle, but Micah Pitts owned the Masters final scorching the competitionwith two wave scores of 9.0 (18 out of a possible 20 points). ScottWaring already had staked his claim on the Super Seniors crown back atevent #9 and it was a good thing because he suffered a quarterfinalshocker in this event. The former Southwest Open Men’s Champion (1980)is now hungrier than ever so watch out Super Seniors at the upcomingWestern Championships, which is in Waring’s home turf at H.B. Pier! Thepowerful Ponto conditions were right up Ironman Mike Gillard’s alley. He won the Senior’s final handily and claimed the conference crown inLongboard with a fourth place finish in the final. Jake Minnehan wonhis seventh consecutive contest and easily snagged the conference title.
