August 22, 2008: – – For the 5th Summer the Belmar Pro will be bringing big-time Professional Surfing to our beaches to climax the 2008 Summer Season. This year’s version, the 2008 Fosters Belmar Pro presented by Global Surf Industries will be held September 11-14th at the 17th Avenue beach.
With five seasons now under it’s belt, the Pro has established itself as one of the marquee surf events anywhere along the East Coast. Eastern Surf Magazine even named the Belmar Pro one of the ten best events ever held on the East Coast. With beautiful Summer temperatures, and positioned at the apex of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, it offers local families and guests the opportunity to watch world class surfing in their own backyard.
Belmar enjoys a very unique heritage in New Jersey Surfing history. Cecil Lear, a long-time Belmar resident, lobbied the Borough for the first ever sanctioned surfing beaches in New Jersey in the early 60’s. He continued by founding the Eastern Surfing Association, the largest amateur surfing association in the World! He’s also an inaugural member of the East Coast Hall of Fame.
Be sure to stop by and check out the “Cecil Rock” at the entrance to the beach on 16th Avenue. The rock was dedicated by the Borough in recognition of all his many accomplishments. Mayor Ken Pringle continues to keep the Borough’s “stoked” approach to Surfing.
This year’s event held from September 11th to 14th will feature a sponsors “tent city”, autograph signings, live music on the beach Saturday and Sunday, featuring Little Flock recording artist Scott Kirby, and Suburban Noize artists, Barry and the Penetrators. O’Neill will be premiering their latest movie release , “The Life”on the beach Saturday night.
Also new for 2008, SRH Clothing will be presenting demo’s of “The Grinch”, an insane tow device which propels surfers into fantastic aerial maneuvers. There will also be plenty of parties for the over 21 crowd too!
The unique format of the Belmar Pro allows local well known surfers like Brian Dalton, Brendan Buckley, Justin Brahn, Trip Shotwell and TJ Mortellaro to test their skills against top international competitors. The sponsors for the 2008 event include: Fosters, Global Surf Industries, SRH, Surf Taco, Eastern Lines Surf Shop, Staybridge Suites, Skull Candy, O’Neill, Jetty, Ocean Lifestyles, US Bodyboard Assoc, Erie Surfboards, Descendant, Star Ledger, NJ.com, 3 Brothers Pizza and TR’s Food Court.
Once again this year’s event will present a Pro Shortboard, Pro Womens, and Pro Longboard divisions. New for 2008, added has been Pro Bodyboard and Stand Up Paddle events. The combined purse for the 2008 Contest will exceed $25,000.00.
The qualifying rounds will be held on Thursday and Friday, with heats of 4 surfers competing in 20 minute heats. The top 2 surfers with the best wave scores advance from each round building toward the main event.
