FOSTER’S PRO SURFING TOUR LAUNCHES AT TRESTLES
Foster’s Cup Brings the Surfing World Together at Southern California’s Best Wave
SAN CLEMENTE-A new era in surfing is set to begin as the Foster’s Pro Surfing Tour kicks off April 23-24 with the all-new Foster’s Cup at Lower Trestles, just south of San Clemente, California. A two-star rated event on the ASP World Qualifying Series, the Foster’s Cup features America’s hottest wave riders competing for $25,000 in cash.
The contest also marks a high point for surf industry support for competitive surfing. In addition to the title and tour sponsorship of Foster’s Beer, the Trestles event is cosponsored by a consortium of over 15 California-based beach lifestyle companies who will host their best national and international team riders in a “tent city” on the shoreline of Southern California’s best competition venue. Furthering the unprecedented spirit of cooperation, Surfer, Surfing and Transworld Surf magazines are all also providing financial and logistical support for this key competition.
The Foster’s Cup marks the first North American appearance of the Foster’s Pro Surfing Tour, a powerful long-term alliance between Surfing America and the famed Australian beer maker. Created by the Surf Industry Manufacturer’s Association (SIMA), Surfing America is the nonprofit
governing body for pro surfing in the USA. The Foster’s Cup event is being produced in conjunction with the PSTA by Jeff Grell of SnowSurfing, Inc.
According to Surfing America president Peter Townend, the launch of the Foster’s Pro Surfing Tour is a landmark in the history of competitivewave-riding. “In terms of Foster’s investment in financial and promotional support, this is the biggest partnership in the history of organizedsurfing,” said Townend. “And the biggest benefactors will be the surfers themselves, who will not only receive upgraded prize money and ratings points, but will also enjoy unprecedented national exposure. It’s a fantastic opportunity to be able to showcase this team effort at anoutstanding wave like Trestles.”
The 16-event Foster’s Pro Surfing Tour incorporates all WQS-rated events in North America and provides the only path to qualifying for the ASP World Championship Tour. This year’s Foster’s Pro Surfing Tour is scheduled for 10 events in California along with stops in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida and Mexico.
An array of top male and female surfers is expected to compete in the Foster’s Cup’s open format and represent their key sponsors in front of the assembled surf industry. From local heroes to World Tour veterans like Tim Curran, Damien Hobgood, Rob Machado and Pat O’Connell, the talent will more than match the quality of Lower Trestles’ long, high-performance waves.
Adding to the upset factor is a hungry new crop of rising stars like Travis Mellem and the Gudauskas Brothers, who are looking forward to put some fresh heat on the established pros. The man to beat, however, will be current World Champion CJ Hobgood from Florida, who will be making his firstCalifornia contest appearance since claiming the crown in December.
The Foster’s Cup will be televised as a half-hour show on the Outdoor Life Network and will air four times, beginning on May 20 at 8:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
