Fosters Upgrades Its Commitment To The Men’s WCT

The Association of Surfing Professionals (asp) is pleased to announce it has secured a naming rights sponsor for the Men´s´ 2004 world championship tour (wct).

Foster´s, official beer of Pro Surf in 2003, has signed a multi-year deal to elevate its relationship with men´s professional surfing by becoming title sponsor of the Foster´s men´s world tour commencing in 2004. A key feature of Foster´s sponsorship is that it secures production of the tour television highlights program, which includes a season opener, and wrap-up program, and one-hour coverage of each tour event. Foster´s will also continue as Official Beer Supplier and sponsor of the Foster´s Expression Sessions.

Announcing the sponsorship at the XBox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters in Hawaii, ASP president Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew said, “the ASP is delighted to see Foster´s further increase its commitment to surfing. It´s great to have a truly global brand behind us, especially one that has earned respect in the international sporting arena through its long-standing support of Formula One Grand Prix.

“The alliance with Foster´s will enable the ASP to deliver on its media objectives, and to benefit from Foster´s global marketing and promotional efforts. We see this as the first step in what we hope will be a long term partnership that grows the success of the Tour into the future – something that will benefit surfers, event licensees, the tour, and the sport.”

Foster´s Brewing International managing director, Richard Scully said, “Foster´s is very excited about taking our connection with surfing to this new level, and as naming rights sponsor we´re serious about delivering some value. In securing the production of the television highlights program we will assist in promotion of surfing in over 190 countries. Foster´s sees the partnership with the ASP as a natural fit and we´re committed to applying our experience in global sports marketing to continue to develop the tour as a successful and respected entity into the future. We can also see the potential for some great synergies with event licensees and sponsors going forward.”

1999 ASP World Champion Mark Occhilupo (Aus) offered his endorsement, “Foster´s has been a part of this year´s tour and it´s cool that they´ll be around next year and making the highlights program happen. Plus, i love the beer.”

Martin Jolly, managing director, IMG and TWI, marketing agent and global television producers and distributors for the ASP said, “We´re delighted that Foster´s has come on board as naming rights sponsor. For foster´s to choose surfing as the complement to Formula One Gand Prix to enhance its global positioning reaffirms IMG´s belief in the future growth of surfing, and in the commercial value of an association with the sport.

IMG has a five-year relationship with the ASP and our plan is to secure a number of strategic commercial alliances to join Foster´s in developing the worldwide tour and taking it to a new level. It´s entirely fitting that the first naming rights sponsor is Foster´s, given its strong connection with the coastal lifestyle and “no worries”, free spirited approach to life.”
