SOLANA BEACH, CA (June 29, 2005) Kokua, – A Hawaiian surfing, rock n’ roll, and environmentally-themed film produced by Ira Opper for Fox’s action sport network, FUEL TV — has received recognition for outstanding achievement by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Pacific Southwest regional EMMY® Award in the Visual and Performing Arts program category. The awards ceremony was held at the Omni Hotel, San Diego on June 18th, 2005.
CJ Olivares, Kokua’s Executive Producer and FUEL TV’s Senior Vice President said: “This recognition is fantastic, not only because we are proud of the collaborative efforts of Opper Sports Productions and FUEL, but also because of the subject matter of the special, Jack and Kim Johnson’s Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Hopefully, this award will help raise additional awareness about the need to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Kokua, an hour-long Fuel TV special which premiered Memorial Day weekend 2004, followed two- time platinum album selling singer-songwriter Jack Johnson through a day in the famed surfing Mecca, the North Shore of Oahu. “I had a great time working with Ira and the crew. They were so easy to have around that I forgot they were making a documentary, said Johnson from his Hawaii recording studio. “I was really impressed with how the project turned out.”
In January 2004, Johnson hosted the first annual Kokua Festival before a sold-out crowd at the Blaisdell Center in downtown Honolulu. The concert coverage featured an all-star lineup of DJ Logic, Makana, Willie K., Amy Hanaiali’I Gilliom, Michael Franti and Spearhead. Jack and his wife Kim created the Kokua Festival as a way of focusing awareness on Hawaii’s threatened island environment.
“Kokua (Hawaiian for “help) has a wonderful message, said the film’s producer and director Ira Opper. “Our creative challenge was to communicate Kokua Hawaii’s mantra of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ to a young audience. Working with the support of Jack, Kim, CJ and an extremely talented production team resulted in a passionate environmental call to action. The Emmy Award honored our collective goal.
Kokua’s production team featured: writer Steve Barilotti of Surfer Magazine, surf cinematographer Sonny Miller, editor Alice Lemon, OSP’s production manager Dustin Hood, music supervisor Kimberly Feilen, Fuel TV’s producer Shon Tomlin with additional photography by Derek Hoffman and Mike Prickett.
