THE 2001 NSSA EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS SEBASTIAN INLET, FLORIDA APRIL 20-22. (April 13) – The National Scholastic Surfing Association will present the ninth annual Eastern Championships onApril 20-22 at Sebastian Inlet, Florida. Over 400 of the east coast’s top surfers from the NSSA’s Southeast,Southeast/North, Northeast and Florida Gulf Conferences are scheduled to compete. The 2001 EasternChampionships is a six star rated event which serves as a qualifier for the 2001 NSSA National Championships tobe held June 26-30 at Lower Trestles . The Eastern Championships will consist of three separate events – theOpen Championships, the Explorer Championships and the Interscholastic Collegiate Championships. The OpenChampionships includes the highest level of competition and is the most prestigious of the NSSA competitivedivisions. The Open Championships is a student only division which includes Mens (16&up), Juniors (13-15),Boys (12&under), Mini Groms (10&under), Womens (all ages) and Bodyboard (all ages). The ExplorerChampionships includes competition in a wide range of student and non student categories. Explorer divisionsinclude Mens (all ages), Juniors (15-17), Boys (13-14), Menehuene (12&under), Womens (all ages), Masters(25&up), Seniors (35&up), Super Seniors (45&up), Longboard (all ages) and Bodyboard (all ages). The NSSAEastern Championships has a rich history of turning out champions who have gone on to success in professionalsurfing. Past winners include C.J. and Damien Hobgood, Ben Bourgeois and Matt Keenan.
The O’Neill SMAS – NSSA Eastern Airshow Championships will be held during the Eastern Championships. The top 6 rated aerialists from the Southeast, Southeast/North and Northeast Conferences will be competing. Thetop 6 finalists will be invited to compete in the National Airshow Championships at Salt Creek Beach Park in DanaPoint, California on June 24.
