Good Waves and High-Performance Surfing Light-up Islas Canarias Santa Pro
SAN JUAN, Lanzarote (Wednesday, November 4, 2009) – The ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Islas Canarias Santa Pro got back in motion at its main venue of San Juan, the expected consistent surf coming to reality for the second day of competition.
With the famous lefthand pointbreak of San Juan delivering five-to-six foot (1.5 to 2 meter) waves throughout the day, Lanzarote witnessed some world class surfing with Round 1 and four heats of Round 2 wrapping-up in clean conditions, top seeds controlling the game in style.
Nic Muscoft (Victoria, AUS), 27, Islas Canarias Santa Pro defending champion, lost no time to set pace and make his intentions clear displaying exceptional surfing to secure his Round 2 ticket. Muscroft, who put on a series of devastating backhand top turns combined to a smart wave selection, lit-up the competition area with the day's highest score of 18.60 points (out of a possible 20).
"That was really fun out there and I am stoked to be back," Muscroft said. "I started off with a couple of messy ones and I was going a bit safe because it was bumpy but then it cleaned-up and my last wave was a really good "wedgy" one. It walled-up right from the corner with a good wall and ran slowly with a couple of good sections so it was a pretty easy wave to surf."
Muscroft, a rookie on this year's ASP World Tour, showed his knowledge of the line-up and let his experience speak waiting patiently for the better set waves to net a 9.00 point ride and a 9.60 consecutively, the event's highest wave scores thus far.
"I've learnt a lot from the ASP World Tour this year," Muscorft said. "It is way more challenging so I guess you come back to the WQS with more confidence. I had really tough heats this year so I am a bit more relaxed and I thought I could enjoy my surfing out there today."
While Muscroft reminded his supremacy over the 96-man field of international competitors, leading ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) contenders answered back with solid results, current ratings' No. 2 Jadson Andre (BRA) leading the Grind's assault in style.
Andre, 19, who is already guaranteed to qualify for next year's ASP World Tour, stepped-up for his start in the prestigious event, unleashing his custom-made progressive surfing to net a 15.00 point heat result and advance.
"It was a good heat and I played my game to secure that first round win," Andre said. "The waves were good, not easy to read though, but I managed to enjoy my time and show what I can do. It's been a good year so far and I am looking at a strong finish so hopefully I can keep things going my way that time."
Much expected for his first appearance in an ASP Europe sanctioned event, Clay Marzo (Maui, HAW) did not disappoint his fans securing a win in Round 1 with the third best wave score of the event, an impressive 8.90 point ride. Marzo, renowned in the surfing world for his explosive and futuristic surfing, showed great determination in the solid six-foot (two meter) sets blasting rapid-fire forehand re-entries to nab 14.40 points.
"We have had good waves the last few days and I was pretty pumped to go out there and compete," Marzo said. "I just sat out there and waited for the sets. That good wave came and I went forit, got two big turns and tried to let go the fins. I am happy it went right, and hopefully we get solid surf in the next couple of days."
Also advancing today was former ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Islas Canarias Santa Pro champion (2007) Patrick Beven (Biarritz, FRA), 31, along with local competitor Jose-Maria Cabrera (Lanzarote, CNY), current ASP WQS No. 4 Patrick Gudauskas (California, USA) and Gony Zubizarreta (Vigo, ESP).
With the swell supposed to build throughout the night and some solid eight-to-nine foot (2.5 to 3 meter) waves sexpected to hit San Juan tomorrow Thursday, officials will meet at 8.30 AM to assess conditions and send get on with the event.
