GoPro POV master Mikala Jones
The son of a surf photographer, Mikala Jones has always had an interest in what happens behind the lens. Years ago in Bali, I hung out and surfed with Mikala as he experimented with big, bulky camera housings that were bolted into to the tail of his surfboards. He had to ride boards in the 7′ range that were far too big for the beachbreak conditions we were surfing (I have no idea where we were surfing, he literally blindfolded me as we drove) to compensate for the added weight. Surfing with a full size camera in a water housing proved quite dangerous and MJ was always getting banged up by the setup. He nailed some great images, but definitely paid the price a few times.
Then came GoPro cameras. MJ was quick to use the small cameras and the rest is history as he became an official GoPro test pilot/ambassador and started dropping crazy GoPro POV clips that documented his incredible skill in the barrel and passion for finding surf off the beaten track. Keep ’em coming, Mikala, love your work!—Justin Coté
