The San Fernando Valley sits miles inland from L.A. County beaches, but the competition among board shops there is as fierce as it is in any coastal community. Since the mid 1980s, Green Sector has been servicing the Tarzana surf, skate, and snowboard contingent. And as the clientele’s taste has evolved so has the look within the shop.
With skateboarding and snowboarding continuing to grab more of the local kids’ attention — and dollar bills — Green Sector has shifted its attention from surf to skate and snow. However, there is still some presence from surf-oriented brands.
Counter Culture has a prominent display in the shop’s softgoods department, although much of it is dominated by a hand-picked selection of apparel from skateboard hardgoods and footwear brands. There is also considerable amount of T-shirts and sweatshirts from Dragon.
Above all, however, Manager Josh Sokolow says Volcom is the hottest brand in the shop. In fact, when we visited in mid November Green Sector had nearly sold out of its entire Volcom selection.
Along with apparel, Sokolow notes the shop’s footwear department has been strong, with Circa and Osiris accounting for the majority of the revenue.
Green Sector prides itself on being one of the Valley’s original snowboard shops. It’s for that reason that fall is the shop’s biggest season — that’s when the shop’s customers come in and gear up for weekend jaunts to Snow Summit and Mammoth.
Many of Green Sector’s customers wait for the shop’s famous Late Night Sale to buy their boards and outerwear. The sale/party, which is held in mid November, runs late into the night backed by a DJ and a well-stocked bar. Customers who spend at least 25 dollars get to spin the shop’s Wheel of Savings, which could earn them anything from a 10 percent discount to a brand new setup. “The more buzzed they get, the more tendency they have to spend money,” jokes Sokolow. In conjunction with this year’s Late Night Sale, Green Sector celebrated the grand opening of its adjacent record store, Sound Sector.
