England Team Call for Rising Star
Young Headworx rider Matt Capel has been selected to represent England at the upcoming European Surfing Championships in Portugal, after a series of impressive performances on the national circuit.
The Headworx surfer’s unique style has caught the eye of the English Surfing Federation selectors and after some notable displays on the BPSA tour this year he is determined to impress on the international scene.
“It is an exciting time for me at the moment and I am really stoked to be selected for the England team. There are some talented surfers in this country so to make the senior team is a great achievement and I hope I can go out there and put in some good performances for the English team. explained Matt.
Still only 19-years-old, Matt has been turning heads on the BPSA tour all year. He was voted the BPSA’s Most Promising Surfing in 2004 and has proved tough competition for some of the world’s top surfers in recent WQS and Pro Junior events.
The European Championships will take place in Costa de Caparica in Portugal from 22nd- 30th October. The England Surf Team is currently one of the top three in Europe and they now have the extra support of Capel’s sponsor Headworx. The brand has struck a deal with the ESF to provide all the clothing kit for the England team riders.
“Headworx are stoked to be involved in English surfing at the highest level and we hope this will be the start of a long and successful partnership with the ESF. explained Headworx Marketing Manager Ben Byfield. “It’s a great way to share our ‘Rider’s Choice’ philosophy with both competitors and supporters and this is also an extra opportunity to support Matt in his surfing career. Everyone at Headworx is delighted to see Matt in the national team and we wish him and all the English surfers the best of luck for Portugal.
Headworx surfer Matt Capel looks forward to British Nationals
Young Headworx rider Matt Capel has his sights firmly set on the BSA British Nationals this weekend, following his call-up to the England Surf Team.
The 19-year-old Headworx surfer is aiming to make a serious challenge for the British title in Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear against Britain’s top surfers. Matt has been impressing on the BPSA circuit, finishing 2nd in the Pro Juniors at the Headworx Welsh Open and 2nd in the Open at the Lusty Glaze Night Surf. He has also made quarter finals in two European Pro Junior events against some of the world’s best up and coming talents.
Last year’s event saw unprecedented crowds swarm to Tynemouth Beach where the title was won by Alan Stokes. With a £5,000 prize purse up for grabs this time around, the Headworx young gun is hoping to impress the judges with his fluid style and big aerial moves to see off the opposition.
“I will be looking for a good performance this weekend ahead of representing England at the European Championships. I am really enjoying my surfing at the moment so I’m hoping I can be relaxed and focused enough to take it to the rest of the field, Matt explained.
“It is an exciting time for me and I am really stoked to be selected for England especially with my sponsors Headworx also being involved with the England team. The British Nationals is such a great opportunity to showcase British surfing and the quality of entrants is always high, so to finish in the top four would be a great achievement. It’ll be down to me to come up with the goods, he added.
