Heaving Beach Breaks

The 15mm lens, or the fish-eye, is usually the lens of choice for shooting Puerto Escondido. Photographically, it captures the true essence of being in a barrel right next to the surfer. But at “the Mexican Pipeline,” looks can be deceiving. The sandbar shacks have a tendency to close out, and a single frame may not reveal the salad-tossing he received seconds later as the wave shut him down. That’s what’s cool about this sequence of Adam Replogle–thanks to the miracle of the telephoto lens, we get to see a surfer actually come out of a deep one. And boy, is this one deep. Photo: Nelson
