Here’s the first footage of Mick Fanning surfing Kelly Slater’s wave pool; video

It’s been a hot minute since Kelly Slater’s wave pool has made a splash in the news (excuse the pun), but the Instagram account for the KS Wave Company posted a video last week of the very first footage of three-time world champion Mick Fanning riding the wave for the first time.

A post shared by Kelly Slater Wave Co. (@kswaveco) on

Fanning, someone who knows a thing or two about all types of waves, seems to enjoy himself throughly. Getting barreled for what seems like an eternity, Fanning eventually tells the camera, “That was, like, real. It didn’t feel like a wave pool; it felt like a real wave.”

While the post uses the hashtag #tbt, there is no mention of when Fanning actually surfed Slater’s wave. Fanning made an Instagram post on June 17 with an image of him in the barrel at Slater’s wave, but that post also does not state when he actually surfed it.

The KS Wave Co. then followed up last week with the footage. Fanning’s visit to Slater’s Surf Ranch has most likely been kept on the down-low intentionally to build suspense for some more footage of Fanning at Slater’s wave pool sometime in the future, as they have done in the past with other big-name surfers.

For now, we’ll just have to enjoy this brief clip and hope more is on the way, as well as invites for the public.
