HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. ¿ Rising surf star Holly Beck has won the “2000 Teen Choice Award” for Female Extreme Athlete. Beck accepted the honor during a nationally televised, two-hour special that aired Tuesday, Aug. 22 on the FOX network.
Other winners included Freddie Prinze, Jr. (Actor/Movie), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Actress/TV), Britney Spears (Female Artist/Music), Tony Hawk (Male Extreme Athlete), Blink-182 (Rock Group/Music), Britney Spears (Female Hottie) and Tyra Banks (Model). Teen Choice winners were selected following a nationwide voting process. Seventeen provided a multi-page ballot in the magazine’s July and August issues. Ballots were also included in several other PRIMEDIA youth entertainment publications such as BOP, Teen Beat, Tiger Beat and Sixteen, for the same two-month period. In addition to the in-book balloting inserts, teen voters, aged 12 through 19, were able to cast their ballot for the year’s top celebrities and athletes online at seventeen.com.
Other celebrities appearing at the standing-room-only event held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger included Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”), Carson Daly (MTV), Courtney Cox Arquette (“Friends”/”Scream 3”) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (“I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”). Sports stars attending included tennis greats and sisters Venus and Serena Williams and Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Live performances included No Doubt, BBMak, Enrique Iglesias and 98 Degrees.
Holly’s evening started with a 30-minute limousine ride from her parent’s house in Palos Verdes to Barker Hanger. She was escorted onto a red carpet lined with photographers and videographers from major media outlets. “I was sandwiched between Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brittney Spears, with Carmen Electra and Mandy Moore nearby,” she said. “From the red carpet, I was escorted into the “green room” where all the stars were waiting for their turn on stage. With a plate full of strange looking food in my hand taken from a mountainous table full of appetizers, my friends and I stood in a tight circle and whispered about the other people in the room. There was Felicity, Buffy, Freddie Prinze Jr., and even Tyra Banks, all within several feet. I couldn’t help but be slightly star-struck. Later in the night, I would literally bump into Jim Carrey backstage.”
Surfing for less than five years, Holly Beck conquered the top ranks of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) and is set to embark on a professional career. Her 4.0 high school GPA propelled the 19 year-old to the University of California, San Diego and a blossoming modeling career has landed her features in Rolling Stone, Teen People, ESPN Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar.
“Surfing’s had a huge impact on my life,” says Beck. “It’s totally reconstructed every aspect. It’s really a motivation to work hard and it’s something to work for. I need to get home and do my homework so I can go surfing. I need to keep my grades up so I can go surfing. It’s a motivation to do everything right, to get everything done so I can go surfing too.”
“Holly is an inspirational female surfer,” said Scott Daley, marketing VP of Body Glove. “We have watched her rise from a local standout to a National Champion. Not only has she proven herself in the ever changing conditions of the ocean, Holly has become an excellent spokesperson for the sport of surfing. Body Glove is proud to have Holly Beck be a part of our International Surf Team!”
Holly Beck has a world of options. Author of a monthly column on Boardom.com, she’s pursuing a modeling career alongside surfing during college. She’s a management sciences major at the University of California, San Diego and has plans to one day open her own surf shop.
As far as professional competition goes, says Beck, “I’d love to be world champion someday. That’s my top goal, but we’ll see what happens. I’d like to finish school and compete as much as I can, then once I get out, I can see where llife has taken me.”
