Humboldt Surf Community Can’t Get Along

Those who think Humboldt County’s surfers are just one big happy family, might want to think again.

Hugh Holt, who has surfed the county’s waters for more than 35 years, said the local surfing community is fraught with divisions between long borders and short borders, beginners and experts, and nowhere are these divides more evident than on a good surf day at Houda Point’s Camel Rock, located off of Scenic Drive between Luffenholtz and Moonstone beaches.

You have these guys coming in that are relative beginners and you place them out there with guys who are highly competitive, good, capable surfers, and you just have this nearly impossible relationship, Holt said.
