The Huntington Beach Surf Series prepares for an exciting weekend!
Surf City-Huntington Beach, Calif. Orange County’s elite Pro/Am surfing event, The Del Taco Huntington Beach Pro/Junior Surf Series, is proud to announce the kick off of their eighth season this Friday though Sunday, May 3-5, at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. “The 2002 planning is complete,” says event director, Seth Matson. “We have redesigned the series to gear it towards the new generation of professional and amateur surfers. And from the response so far, many of the contestants are excited about the new Pro/Junior Division. It’s time to think about the future sport of surfing and who is going to represent the United States of America in years to come. This new format will point these younger surfers in that direction.”
The event this year will target the best of the young up-and-coming stars. The new Pro/Junior format is a much-needed change. It will help train young amateurs into strong, smart and experienced professional competitors, as well as give the young pros a chance to showcase their talents in front of a big venue, preparing them for the WQS and World Circuit Tours. The pier at Huntington is synonymous with the sport of surfing on mainland USA. The HB Pro/Junior Surf Series is proud to have all of its contests at this prestigious spot.
This new generation of surfers will be competing for some incredible prizes. Each event will pay out $2,000 cash to the Pro/Junior winner and the 1st place overall rated winner will win a round trip ticket to Indonesia. Del Taco also sponsors the new “Macho” Air Show with a $500.00 prize being awarded to the surfer who grabs the biggest, cleanest aerial and /or most radical maneuver in a four man final at each event. The 1st place overall series winner of the Macho Airshow will win a round trip ticket to Hawaii. That’s not all! The 1st place overall winner in all amateur divisions will win a round trip ticket to Cabo San Lucas sponsored by Hss (Huntington Surf and Sport)
Each event will run for three days. Pro/Junior surfers and Air Show contestants will compete in preliminary heats on Fridays and run through to the finals on Saturday. The Pro/Junior division is for surfers who are 20 yrs. old and under. The Macho Airshow division is open to all ages. Amateur surfers will compete on Sunday in the following divisions: (The Groms and Boys will surf preliminary heats on Saturday afternoon). Super Groms (11 & under), Boys (12-14), Juniors (15-17), Mens (18-28), Masters (29 & up), Longboard and Womens (age open).
