Where: The cobblestone peak at Lower Trestles in the north San Diego County.
Who: The ASP top 34 and two event wildcards (one trials winner and one Hurley wildcard).
When: The best, most contestable days between September 18-24, 2011.
Now that we're past the halfway point in the year, the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles will be a critical stop in the quest for an ASP World Championship title. While Kelly Slater is sitting several thousand points ahead of Owen Wright, his 11th World Title isn't a gimme just yet as he'll have to not only thwart Wright, but Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith, and Adriano De Souza who lurk below him.
The ultimate venue in high performance, aerial based surfing, Lower Trestles will favor those who can fly through the air. But don't count out the guys who are more power-based, the best all-around surfers usually win at Lowers.
With the addition of high-flying youngsters Miguel Pupo, Gabriel Medina, and John John Florence, expect to see some nervous tour veterans. The trio adds new life and energy to the tour, but don't expect the veterans to roll over for the groms—Lowers is going to be a battle! Below are our picks, what are yours?
Editor In Chief
Winner: I'm not gonna say Kelly Slater, I'm not gonna say Kelly Slater, I'm not gonna say Kelly Slater, I'm not gonna say Kelly Slater… Yes I am. Kelly Slater will win. Sorry everybody. If we take him out of the equation, let's hope our sentimental favorite, Josh Kerr, will take this one—he deserves a win.
Shocker: The mid-level tour guys who are about to face the frontside fury of Gabriel Medina. God have mercy on your souls.
Who Will Rip: Cory Lopez has been getting robbed all year, so hopefully he'll get in and do some damage to make up for what the judges have been handing him lately. Taylor Knox, are you reading this? Can you please win this event? If you do, I'll get a Taylor Knox tattoo. Seriously. That's my promise to you.
Who Will Slip: After New York the Brazzo's are either super pissed, or just plain over it. Jadson got robbed, Heitor surfed better then I've ever seen him but still got slighted. Adriano had a good go but got edged out in the end. I'm not saying they'll slip, I'm just saying they'll need to take their act one step beyond to get the win at Lowers.
Winner: Trestles never fails to be a crapshoot because it's either Kelly or someone you wouldn't normally pick to win. Anyway, Taj was freakin' killing it in NY and looks fit and ready to rip. I'm going with TB.
Shocker: Everyone. Those Trestles lulls always seem to throw everyone off.
Who Will Rip: Josh Kerr. Yes, I'm on the Kerrsy bandwagon only because the end section ramps at Lowers fit him perfectly.
Who Will Slip: Guys who don't do a lot of airs. Take your pick.
Winner: It's gonna be a Julian Wilson vs. Slater final, with the old guy getting another "W." He's won at Lowers four out of the last six years, and is likely quite heated after being taken out by Owen last week.
Shocker: It's getting fun to guess what ailments Dane Reynolds might come up with to skip World Tour comps. Has he used explosive diarrhea yet?
Who Will Rip: John Florence will do something big, but won't go deep into the comp.
Who Will Slip: Many goofyfooters have a strike against them on Lower's long right walls. And goofies that can't launch solid airs are in for a rough event.
Winner: I think the surf is going to be on the small side, which favors flyweight Brazilian Gabriel Medina. While it gets repetitive, nobody can match his frontside airs.
Shocker: Dane Reynolds surfs in a World Tour event. My other shocking scenario sees Bobby Martinez parachute out of the FTW plane and right into another f-bomb filled marketing ploy disguised as an interview.
Who Will Rip: Josh Kerr, Miguel Pupo, Taylor Knox, Parko, and Fanning.
Who Will Slip: More than one hotshot pro is going to fall on their ass while attempting to navigate the cobblestones at low tide. For a fleeting second, they will be just as clumsy and uncool as the rest of us.
Winner: Slater. I’m on the bandwagon (with everyone) after NY. Slater demolishes Lowers. Does anyone remember how good he surfed there last year?
Shocker: Gabriel Medina. He’s slayed the primes, but his power routine needs a little work before he’ll go all the way in a WT event.
Who Will Rip: Taj Burrow. He’s fired up after losing to Slater in the last minute, again.
Who Will Slip: Anyone that forgets to wax the top of their feet before tromping over the algae encrusted lowers cobblestones. Those things are slick as hell.
