If you happened to catch just a minute of the webcast of the Hurley Pro Trestles today you would already know that it was as good as it gets. It remained glassy from heat 1 throughout the entire day and offered overhead walls for the world’s best to completely decimate. As Taj put it keenly after the last heat of the day, “You have to go so mad out there to get a score. Whoever wins this will have really earned it.” This is why it’s called the Dream Tour…

A rundown of one of the best days of competition at Lowers, ever:

Flawless Friday also saw the first three-man heats in a Round 4 in ages. It was exciting to see guys totally going for broke since no one could lose out—but that didn’t mean they still didn’t want to win those heats. Because a win in Round 4 meant a ticket right to the quarterfinals. These were awarded to Taj Burrow, Owen Wright, Mick Fanning, and Jordy Smith.

Jordy vs. Simpo, a rematch of US Open final. You know Jordy wanted to get him back. Jordy’s surfing showed that he wanted to completely smash Simpo. But Jordy wouldn’t quite say it: “Early this morning I was thinking about it the whole time. He’s really good, I was just lucky that there was more open faces for me out there. It sucks beating your friends all the time.” Jordy’s fronthand carves went unmatched today. But Simpo was not to be outdone either, because he was surfing as good as he can with finners and man hacks to boot. And for as good as Jordy surfed, what the f—k is up with those god damn superman airs? They’re not even supermans because there is no full extension to them. They’re more like frog leaps. They suck, stop doing them Jordy.

Jordy: Stop doing these frog leaps. They are airs that people like me who can't do airs should be trying, not people like you who land ridiculous rodeo clowns. Photo: Checkwood

Dane on the other hand doesn’t do frog leaps—he said he’s never done one in his life. Take note Jordy.

But what Dane went for was a gigantic rodeo on a left and almost nearly stuck it. And that wasn’t all he did in his Round 3 butchering of Luke Steadman. He put up eighteen-and-a-half points by surfing every wave he caught exactly how I was mindsurfing them from my office desk, wishing I could do half the things he was doing. During his giant slob air he somehow cut his head, and while paddling back out blood mixed with his white #4 jersey all along his name on the top of his back. It was easily the air of the event and it garnered the highest heat total of the contest.
