San Juan Capistrano, CA, September 22, 2011 – Surfing America, the National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States, is pleased to announce that ISA Gold Medal winning, PacSun USA Surf Team Coach, Ian “Kanga” Cairns, has agreed to continue his successful tenure coaching the PacSun USA Surf Team through 2012!
“There is no one in the country that can match Ian’s impressive credentials in competing, running events and coaching at the highest level,” said Surfing America President Jeff Booth. “I know Ian’s coaching ability first hand, having trained under Ian and former USA Surf Team Coach Peter “PT” Townend in the 80’s on the NSSA National Team.”
In a surfing career of over 40 years, Ian Cairns twice represented Australia on their National Team and won 6 WCT level events, usually in the big waves of Hawaii. Also, he was 2nd in the world in the first year of organized rankings in 1976. Changing gears, Ian moved onto event production and founded the Op Pro, which led to founding the Association of Surfing Professionals in 1983. Following a sabbatical in Australia, he returned to the United States in 1991 and took over the reins of the PSAA leading to the launch of the US Open of Surfing and a resurgence of American surfing. For the past four years Ian Cairns has been focused primarily on coaching-and is working with many of the top athletes on the Association of Surfing Professionals’ World Qualifying Series and Championship Tour. Ian was also successful in bringing home a Gold Medal with the PacSun USA Surf Team from the 2010 ISA World Surfing Games in Costa Rica.
Coach Cairns said, “I am really excited about the potential of our young PacSun Jr Team and before we contest the next ISA Jr event, we’re planning camps, where I plan on teaching them some hard core tactical skills and broadening their experience in a variety of waves.”
“We are stoked to have Ian back as Coach,” said Surfing America Director, Greg Cruse. “Ian’s experience can really help our young team to excel and grow in the areas they need most – power surfing and mentally and physically dominating their heats.” “With Ian on board we are excited about the team’s prospects for Gold at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Panama in April.”
