For our Top 4 finishers, making Top 10 wasn’t even a question. Two unanimous votes—we’ve never even had one—and the other two probably involved personal vendettas. With these sections, if you didn’t include them on your list, maybe you shouldn’t have been a judge.
But wait a moment—this thing is far from over. Plenty of time for an upset? Plenty of voting left. Top Ten is only halfway to Top Five… and last I checked, this is still Innersection. Weird shit happens.
To determine this group, we invited 50 of Innersection’s most active voters, commenters and vid watchers to submit their personal Top 10 lists. For each list a surfer was on, he got a point. Thus, 50/50 means a surfer was on every single voters list. Yeah, impressive.
Here’s how they weighed in:
1. John John Florence (by Reagan Ritchie)
TOP TEN SCORE: 50/50
BREAKDOWN: Did the smallest surfer just go the biggest? Some of these waves are seriously scary, and 2John does all his airs with his own style and flair.
QUOTE: “I’m really amped on this part. A lot of flair and variety in his surfing. Song works too. Solid sector!” —Kai Neville, filmmaker
2. Josh Kerr (by Jimmy Graham)
TOP TEN SCORE: 50/50
BREAKDOWN: Scary thing about Kerr’s section is what he didn’t use. This is probably the most progressive surfing in this entire competition so far, and Josh Kerr is just getting started.
QUOTE: “Easy top 3 section. Kerr I know your saving a couple bangers for the movie. Even doing that this part is still one of the top ones of the round.” —Taylor Steele, filmmaker
3. Clay Marzo (by Adam Klevin)
TOP TEN SCORE: 48/50
BREAKDOWN: We knew Clay was gonna blow us away. And he did. Marzo probably walked through this round…but we’re be expecting $100k worth from him on the DVD.
QUOTE: “This is a heavy section. My favorite from the round.” —Taylor STeele, filmmaker
4. Pat Guduaskas (by Graham Nash and Chris Steblay)
TOP TEN SCORE: 47/50
BREAKDOWN: Pat probably delivers the best all-around package of this round. His theme is actually creative and well shot (a department most of the others are sorely lacking, despite amazing surf). He delivers huge waves at Mavericks (including a major wipeout), rodeo flips on three continents, and even some beautiful surf cinematography. Well done.
QUOTE: “Geez, Pat, I didn’t know you were THAT good! Win some bloody heats will ya. Nice job by the editor. Don’t ever use that song again.” —Nick Carroll, editor
5. Dillon Perillo (by Josh Landan and Zach Brown)
TOP TEN SCORE: 42/50
BREAKDOWN: Dillon’s section is exciting. There’s a little something extra on all the moves, Landen’s nature shots are active and beautiful, and the song makes your blood pump.
QUOTE: “Reminds me of Frankie Oberholzer with a 2010 repertoire. one of my new favorites.” —Shea Lopez, pro surfer
6. Ozzy Wrong (by Jimmy Kinniard)
TOP TEN SCORE: 42/50
BREAKDOWN: No one wrote Ozzy’s real name in their vote for him. That’s the statement this section made: there is no Ozzie Wright. Just Ozzy Wrong. Possibly Innersection’s most creative submission to date, Wrong scores bonus points for making his own song.
QUOTE: “One of the original original! People try to imatate him but his surfing surfing style and his personality are all one of a kind. This was a cool clip i loved watching it. Super entertaining.” —Andy Irons, world champ
7. Dean Morrison (by Matty Gye and Shagga; asurfersparadise.tv)
TOP TEN SCORE: 32/50
BREAKDOWN: Dean’s always been a top surfer, rated alongside Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson, but a consistent comment from experienced viewers about this section is how Dean’s raising the bar with his surfing here. Good to see.
QUOTE: “One of the best tube riders in the world. His part is sick. Its awesome to see Dean get so good at airs. Should have found a different song. I give him an 8.” —Andy Irons
8. Ian Walsh (by Justin Clark)
TOP TEN SCORE: 27/50
BREAKDOWN: Innersection tourist’s complaining about too many air-reverses obviously missed out on Ian Walsh’s section. Thank god our judges didn’t. Sure, he delivers a full package of turns and high-performance, but this is also some of the heaviest barrel riding of any round. Respect.
QUOTE: “Great part. Top 5 easy. Has great flow and variety. Couple older clips that will be replaced for the movie.” —Taylor Steele
9. Ry Craike (by Tom Jennings)
TOP TEN SCORE: 21/50
BREAKDOWN: Ry’s opening waves make you want to go surfing. His closing waves make you content just watching. Great variety, great wave, great surfing. Just a solid section.
QUOTE: “Can I please be Ry Craike for like, a week? sick waves, mean ass frontside whips and big tubes! This should be a top fiver.” —Chris Cote, himself
10. Marlon Gerber (by Logan and Rudy)
TOP TEN SCORE: 21/50
BREAKDOWN: Marlon made Top 10 in opening round of Innersection, and this time his part is even stronger. Everyone agrees he’s one of the smoothest surfers around, with a full quiver of manuevers and great waves to match. Indonesian surfers have had a hard time competing with international media hype, so it’s nice to see Marlon pull through with the judges.
QUOTE: “Marlon is so smooth that what he’s doing is overlooked. In my top 5. Great song too.” —Taylor Steele, filmmaker
