When asked what he does besides surf, Jesse Colombo just kinda chuckles. According to him, he doesn’t really like to do anything–except surf. “I’d rather just surf a good wave,” he says. Ordinarily this would sound boring as hell, but if you’re from Santa Cruz and you have the playgrounds he does, you’d never want to leave. He hasn’t. If Jesse ever committed a crime, all the cops would have to do to find him is go to Pleasure Point, paddle out, and slap some handcuffs on him.
He’s never really traveled outside his hometown except for a couple jaunts to the East Coast and Hawai‘i–this year he’s fulfilling a dream and traveling to Indonesia.
He’s also gonna try to prove himself on the compo circuit because the more heats he makes, the better he feels. Whether it’s air shows or WQSs, a huge goal for him is to make a career out of his love for the sport, “I want to make money ’cause I’m broke,” he says. As a busboy at the Crow’s Nest at the mouth of the Santa Cruz harbor, he finds it extra hard to do his job when his shift starts and the Murph Bar is doing its evening clean up. Similar to torture, he picks up after sloppy tourists watching the sunset while his buddies Noi Kaulukakui and Bud Freitas are blowing up right outside the window. “It’s so hard watching guys get spit out of barrels while I work,” says Jesse. Hopefully someday he’ll be able to watch the sun go down from the water more often.–Checkwood
