Jodie Nelson Completes The Paddle Of A Lifetime

Joined by a rare Menke whale she dubbed

Hurley family member and former pro surfer Jodie Nelson has seen her fair share of challenges. Which couldn’t have been better preparation for her biggest challenge to date: stand-up paddling from Catalina to Dana Point — solo — in the name of breast cancer awareness. She completed the monumental task today, finishing the 39-plus-mile crossing in nine hours and fifteen minutes.

She couldn’t have picked a better day to do it, as a big group of friends, loved ones and well-wishers were there to greet her in hot, slack-wind, summer-like conditions. According to friends on the assist boat, she never wavered the entire paddle. Nelson, whose mom and good friend have both battled breast cancer, has received tons of press coverage on her mission, with regular features on local news stations and updates on KFI.

All the well-deserved publicity has gotten her closer to her goal of $100,000 for breast cancer research, but she still needs your help. Go to paddlewithpurpose to make your donation now.
