"Kelly Slater, you are in a combination situation. Repeat: Kelly, you are in combo land!"
OK, maybe I made that quote up, but still, just the thought of Kelly being down by more than 10 points (i.e. “combo land") is unfathomable—unless his opponent is John John Florence. Matching up against Slater and Adriano de Souza in Round 4 of the Hurley Pro Lower Trestles, John John exacted revenge on the guy who narrowly beat him in the semifinals of the Billabong Pro Tahiti, and he did it in record-setting fashion.
No surfer had ever dropped five rides that scored over 9 points apiece until John John did that on Wednesday at Lowers, according to the ASP. "I was pretty focused in that heat. I was fortunate enough to be on some really well-shaped waves that allowed me to open up and perform. Stoked on the heat and looking forward to a big finish tomorrow,” he said in a post-heat interview.
John John would never say it, but when he's surfing like that, there's nobody on the ASP World Championship Tour who can stop him. Other standouts Wednesday at Lowers included current ratings leader Gabriel Medina, Joel Parkinson, and Mick Fanning. With a south swell expected to linger around long enough to finish the Hurley Pro in fantastic conditions, expect a barnburner of a finish Thursday. Quarterfinal matchups are below.
