He looked Hawai‘ian, and he surfed insane. His board was much less covered with sponsors’ stickers than most the guys in the lineup at Rocky Point that day, so I knew this guy was on his way up the ladder. Much to my disbelief, he’s not Hawai‘ian–he’s from Mexico. Kalle Carranza is a far cry from many of today’s surfers. He comes from a surf-stoked area in mainland Mexico that isn’t visited as frequently as, let’s say, Puerto Escondido or Cabo San Lucas. Even though his hometown may not be as popular as the other prime Mexican destinations, Kalle grew up surfing perfect surf, and his talent shows.
For the last two years, Kalle’s been traveling the world and spending far less time at home. He’s on the road, surfing as much as he can, and shooting relentlessly. Kalle isn’t into the politics of the surf industry, and he’s not infatuated with who makes what kind of dough. Instead, Kalle is concerned with staying wet, getting barreled, being a positive role model to all of his surfing amigos back home in Puerto Vallarta, and making his ultimate dream come true.–Kepp
