With the $100 per heat win (skin) the groms knew the stakes were high and the ultimate grand prize of a free trip to France was buzzing around the beach amongst parents and competitors. With myself and Quiksilver International’s WCT webcast star Todd Kline calling the shots with his tales from the Tour, the groms were frothing!!!
The competition was fierce with some of Southern California’s best under 15 yr olds like Andrew Doheny, Ford Archbold, Kolohe Andino, Luke Davis, Dane Zaun, Dillon Perillo and out of towners like Florida’s Nick Rupp and Hawaiian Kalani David flying in to scrap with the Cali groms. Out of the 24 skins passed out, Quiksilver rippers Billy Hopkins, AJ Collins, Thomas Clarke and Quinn McCrystal all claimed skins and $700 out of the $2,400 prize purse.
Eventual KOG winner 15 yr old Brent Reilly from Carlsbad took to the format from the start and nailed 4 skin winning claims right out of the gates and was one of the most consistent surfers, dropping high 6’s and 7’s throughout the day. In the heat that would be his last going for his 5th skin, Brent couldn’t find the score he needed, but had nailed the overall win as no surfer could have logistically caught him and was crowned the Quiksilver King Of The Groms Regional Champion! Reilly took down $400 cash, an all expense paid trip to France with a chaperone and a chance to compete in the King Of The Groms International Championships in Capbreton where the prize will be a seed into the Trials and Expression Sessions in all of the Quiksilver World Championship Tour events at Snapper Rocks, Australia, Hebara Beach, Japan and Hossegor, France to surf with and against the worlds best surfers courtesy of Quiksilver.
