Kolohe Andino Takes Third Consecutive ASP 6-Star Win At Fantastic Noodles Kangaroo Island Pro
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Wednesday, November 9, 2011) – Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 17, continued to add to his list of accomplishments this season, clinching his third-consecutive ASP 6-Star event at the Fantastic Noodles Kangaroo Island Pro when he defeated Kiwi surfer Jay Quinn (NZL), 28, in windy two-to-three foot waves at Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island, Australia.
Andino clinched back-to-back wins last month in Brazil, winning both the SuperSurf Internacional and the Quiksilver Brasil Open of Surfing and maintained his form after entering the Fantastic Noodles Kangaroo Island Pro as the top seed, donating dominant performances on each day of competition.
“Kangaroo Island is like an ideal place for me,” Andino said. “It’s really country, there’s not a lot of people around, it’s great. There was even some wallabies hopping around our cabin the other night, my friends and I were freaking out, it was pretty cool. I’m feeling confident at this event, even though I feel like I wasn’t surfing too good in that heat, I’ve got good boards and I’m stoked to get through.”
Andino’s win launches him up the ASP World Rankings to No. 24, putting him in a likely position to join the elite ASP World Tour for 2012 and the young Californian is motivated to join the impressive list of international up-and-comers who are flaring in ASP Top 34 events.
“It feels kind of surreal right now,” Andino said. “Hopefully I can make the ASP World Title Series for next year now. I’m just competitive and want to win, I knew there was a lot of opportunity for me to do well here and I’m happy it went my way. With guys like Gabriel Medina winning events on tour, I just really want to get there. After he won that last event I just thought that I have to be on there too.”
Andino will now travel to Hawaii to compete in the ASP 6-Star Reef Hawaiian Pro, which holds a waiting period from November 12 through 20th, 2011.
