US$50,000 aerial surfing event window opens
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, January 2010: Kustom Airstrike, the eight-month mission to reward the world’s most innovative and crazy aerial surfing maneuver, officially launched January 1st.
The US$50,000 winner-take-all event, the world’s richest single-trick surfing contest, is open to all surfers globally—whether they be professionals or just the un-sponsored young kid on the local beachbreak.
Their mate who films the winning move will also be showered with a $US5000 cash prize from surf footwear brand Kustom.
The event window runs from 1 January through to 31 August 2010, meaning that thousands of waves will be ridden over 243 days across all corners of the globe to find just one winner.
The opening of the event today has been marked with the launch of the official event website kustomairstrike.com. The website will be the gateway for surfers around the world to view entries as they are received at the Airstike headquarters.
“Last year’s Kustom Airstrike saw a few surfers throw down some sick entries early in the event window and they remained in contention all the way through the competition period,” said Harry Truscott, Kustom Footwear’s General Manager.
“The more you watch some of these airs the more inspiring and amazing they appear, so I think you may see a few of the guys fire out of the blocks early in the event window to sear their moves into the minds of the judges. Each year the standard just seems to lift and the moves become more insane so it is incredible to think that through 2010 someone is likely to top last year’s winning move from Dusty Payne.”
Harry Truscott said the Kustom Airstike mission, which is to produce surfing that is so inspired and revolutionary that it breaks all the rules of surfing, is a unique concept in surfing.
“Any beach with a breaking wave turns into a potential competition venue,” said Pat Fraley, Brand Director of Kustom USA. “We know there are surfers doing amazing things above the wave on breaks around the world so we are now reaching out to them to show us what they’ve got. That’s the exciting thing about this event. We don’t know what we’re going to uncover and it is exciting to think that the prize purse could go to anyone on any wave on any beach in the world.”
