The Local Motion Surf Into Summer was completed on Monday, May 28 in small but “rippable” one-foot surf. Although the tiny surf showed no signs of materializing, mounting on the beach during the last two heats right in front the contest stage was the biggest set of prize packages ever witnessed by any Hawaiian awards finalist.
“Choke prizes, that’s why I always enter”, said one drooling Junior finalist.
Another added, “Brah, looks like surf shop goodie bag city”.
Over 15,000 dollars in prizes were given to all 66 surfers in eleven finals as well as 250 dollars to Shea Hodges for the Surfing Girl Magazine award for best high performance maneuver. Sandy Chang, girls’ shortboard winner, picked up 150 bucks for the second best high performance move. Miku Uemura, girls’ longboard winner got a cool 100 dollars for the longest nose ride.
In the Surfing Magazine Air Show, local pro Brian Pacheco took home the 100-dollar prize, which he probably used to pay off his parking ticket at the jam-packed Ala Moana park. Other winners included Kekoa Cazimero (menehune), Gavin Gillette (boys), Billy Choi (men), Eddie Ogata (senior men), and Achraft Marzouki (longboard men).
Additionally, Local Motion surfboards were given away to two standouts Chad Navarro and Ira Miyasaki in the junior division.
