The Final Day of Competition to be Broadcast Live on the Web at Roxy.com/Cardiff
Huntington Beach, Calif. – (September 20, 2008) – The second day of the Roxy Jam Cardiff presented by Schick® Quattro for Women®, featuring the Linda Benson Women’s World Longboard Pro saw blue skies and excellent conditions with great two to four foot waves. Competition was tight for the second day of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned six-star event at Cardiff Reef. The beach was packed with spectators who came out to enjoy the sunshine, festival and support the more than 80 female pro longboarders from around the world in the contest.
The event’s top seeded pros entered the water today for Rounds 3 and 4. Roxy team-rider and defending event champion Jen Smith made an impressive show in her first heat of the competition, posting a combined score of 14.50 for the win. Surfing in the last heat of the day, Roxy team-rider and Oceanside resident Kassia Meador closed out the day’s action with two long rides, connecting small sections all the way to the shore and leaving the crowds excited for tomorrow’s finals.
“It was a difficult heat and I had to make sure I got the best waves,” said Kassia Meador. “Everyone is surfing really well and really pushing the limits. This event has grown so much over the last three years with the level of competition getting stronger each year.”
Tomorrow’s quarters, semis and finals will be broadcast live on the web at www.beachbyte.com/live08/cardiff08/live.asp, with the winner of the Roxy Jam Cardiff being crowned the Women’s U.S. Regional Longboarding Champion and earning a coveted spot in the prestigious Roxy Jam Biarritz Women’s World Longboard Championships in July 2009. In addition to the $15,000 purse prize up for grabs, presenting sponsor Schick® Quattro for Women® will award a $3,000 Schick® Quattro for Women® Style Award to the pro surfer that demonstrates the best style over the course of the contest. Hansen’s Surf Shop will offer a second $3,000 purse prize for the Wave of the Day.
With the pro competition finishing for the day in the early afternoon, the contestants and spectators were able to enjoy the beach festival which kicked off this morning at 9am. The family-oriented beach fair, featuring Roxy and other sponsor tents, also includes free hairstyling by Paul Mitchell, making your own custom Roxy flip flops and a pancake breakfast with the Encinitas Fire Dept. Closing out the festivities on Sunday is a board shapers raffle, with a chance to win a personal board of choice from a legendary surfboard shaper. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy to help raise community awareness about urban run-off and to supplement the Conservancy’s water quality testing program.
