Tragedy has struck the surfing world again. On Wednesday, November 3rd, we lost another member of our tribe, Maui’s Steve Cooney, in a car accident. Cooney, who was known as one of the best surfers on the island, was a wonderful person to be around and put a smile on everyone’s face he encountered.
Just last winter, I had the pleasure of meeting Cooney for the first time and I will personally cherish the memories I have of him—launching huge airs, cracking jokes on the way to the surf, and keeping the groms in check, forever. Steve was always a welcoming figure, especially on the sometimes territorial island he loved. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to Steve’s friends and family. He will be greatly missed. Steve, who one time after winning an air show at Hookipa raised both of his arms, “One for E (Eric Diaz) and one for Justin (Roberson) will join his fallen brothers in the big barrel in the sky. Rest in peace brother.-Justin Cote
