From friends of recently passed away San Diego County surfer Colin Wagschal:
Join us at 2pm at Seaside Reef in Solana Beach, Friday March 28 to celebrate our dear friend Colin Wagschal’s life! We will be BBQing, hanging out and doing the one thing Colin cherished more than anything; riding waves with all his friends!
Story posted Tuesday:
Late Monday night, San Diego lost a great surfer and all around greatperson. Colin Wagschal was apparently driving home when deputies believe he lost control of his truck, which rolled over into a drainage ditch. He was 32 years old.
Wagschal grew up in Solana Beach and made a name for himself as a talented up and coming junior in the early and mid 90s. At 5’3″ he was on the smallerside, but had a compact and powerful style, reminiscent of Occy. Back in the early 90s when pros from around the world were starting to come to Seaside reef in Solana Beach to get in front of Taylor Steele’s camera, Colin was already ripping it apart and quickly became part of the Momentum generation’s extended family. Pros like Kalani Robb and others stayed at Colin’s house, and returned the favor when he traveled to Hawaii.
In more recent years, Colin was still surfing and ripping, competing in pro-ams and winning the men’s division of the 2007 Koastal Kaos series.
According to a report on sigonsadiego.com, he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the crash occurred. Colin will be greatly missed by friends, family, and the North San Diego County surfing community.–Casey Koteen
