Ultimate Boarder Press Release
Goleta, Calif., March 17, 2010 – The third year was a charm for professional surfer Mike Morrissey (Laguna Beach, Calif.) as he secured a victory in the first stage of the 3rd Annual Ultimate Boarder Championship powered by SanDisk. Well known for his arialistic surfing, Morrissey surfed with power and consistency throughout the day, taking full advantage of the three-to-four foot glassy wave conditions. He finished 5th overall in last year's Ultimate Boarder competition, and yesterday's win gives him a huge advantage moving into the final two stages.
"I am so happy to be atop the podium," said Morrissey. "There was some tough competition out there, but felt comfortable in the water and just surfed to the best of my abilities. I'm stoked to be heading to the snow now."
Nathan Carroll (Haleiwa, HI), Bryce Young (Angourie, AUS), Shayne Nelson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Eric McHenry (Cardiff, Calif.) rounded out the action packed, Solo division final.
There was an excess of impressive riding by many of the 62 athletes that took to the water today, but the most notable performance of the day went to Cardiff Reef local and former ASP surfer, Rob Machado, who led Team Hosoi to win the Open Team division. Machado was followed in the standings by Anthony Petruso (Malibu, Calif.), Johnny Noris (La Jolla, Calif.), and Chris Waring (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
On a mission to nurture and inspire a new generation of athletes, Ultimate Boarder expanded the event yet again this year to include a Under 16 Team division. After a crowd awing final, it was Trevor Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) of Team Eternal who took the win and gave his team a huge advantage moving into the snowboarding stage. Rounding out the top five competitors in the final, in order of placement were Chaz Kinoshito (Maui, HAW), Ian Simmons (San Clemente, Calif.), Frank Curren (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Thelen McKinna-Worrell (Malibu, Calif.) rounded out the final.
"We had an incredible day at Seaside Reef, and were pleased with our location choice this year," said Tim Hoover, Founder and CEO of Ultimate Boarder. "We ran the event on the last day of our four-day waiting period but it proved to be well worth the wait, as the conditions were stellar and the athletes were stoked."
Stage two of the Ultimate Boarder competition is snowboarding, which will take place on Friday, March 19th starting at 10 a.m. at Northstar-at-Tahoe.
